What is Liposuction?
Liposuction, which is commonly referred to as lipoplasty or lipo, is one of the most popular plastic surgery procedures that improve the body’s contour. It works by removing fat from areas between the skin and muscle.
Liposuction is performed using a tumescent technique that involves the use of lidocaine, a local anesthetic that numbs surgical areas, and epinephrine, a vasoconstrictor that helps control blood loss by temporarily narrowing blood vessels. The benefits of the tumescent technique include the following:
- Less blood loss
- Decreased pain
- A quicker recovery
Cutting Edge Techniques Offered
VASER® ultrasound liposuction is one of the latest advancements in liposuction and is offered at Premier Image Cosmetic and Laser Surgery.
During a VASER® ultrasound liposuction procedure, thermal energy is used to target and eliminate stubborn fat cells without harming vascular, nervous, and connective tissues. Generally, VASER® liposuction is recommended for patients who want to remove small amounts of fat or fat in areas that are harder to treat, such as the back and male breasts when they are larger than normal. Patients who are interested in having a liposuction procedure will work with their surgeon to determine which liposuction technique is right for them.
How is Liposuction Performed?
During a liposuction procedure at Premier Image Cosmetic and Laser Surgery, the following steps are carried out:
- Local anesthetic or anesthesia is administered. The patient comfortably rests on the procedure room table and is administered medications that will help the patient remain comfortable throughout the entire procedure. The choice regarding the use of local anesthetics, IV sedation, or general anesthesia is one that will be made by the surgeon and the patient well before surgery.
- Tiny incisions are made. Small incisions that are about the size of the pinky fingernail are strategically placed along natural skin folds near areas where fat is to be removed.
- Stubborn fat is removed via suction. Varying amounts of tumescent fluid are infiltrated into fatty layers to help minimize blood loss and decrease pain. A tiny, hollow tube known as a cannula is placed through the incisions and gently moved back and forth to loosen fat. A surgical suction device is then inserted into the cannula and dislodged fat is suctioned out of the body.
Once the fat is removed, the incisions are closed and dressings are placed over them. A compression bandage is gently wrapped around the dressings to help the skin conform to the body’s new contour and minimize swelling.
Recovery from Liposuction
Following the procedure, the patient is brought to the postoperative recovery room where they will be monitored by recovery room nurses and physicians while the effects of surgical medications wear off. Patients are allowed to be driven home by a family member or friend following surgery. Minor discomfort and pain after surgery should be expected and is usually controlled using over-the-counter or prescription pain medications. Swelling following surgery is common. If bruising occurs, it is usually minimal. Prior to their surgery, patients will be given information regarding the following:
- How to take proper care of their compression bandage and dressings
- Proper use of pain and possibly antibiotic medications
- Activities and foods that should be avoided
Patients will see the surgeon for their first post operative appointment seven to ten days after surgery.
Improvements are first seen when the compression bandage is removed. In most cases, patients will notice a dramatic improvement in their body contour and shape six weeks after their procedure. Improvements will continue to be noticed as swelling decreases, sometimes over the course of three to six months. The end result following a liposuction procedure is a more youthful and healthier appearance that perfectly matches the patient’s inner health. Fat will not return provided the patient maintains an active lifestyle and healthy diet.
Good Candidates for Liposuction
Patients who have areas of fat that do not respond to diet and exercise may be candidates for a liposuction procedure. The procedure is generally performed on patients who exercise, eat healthily, maintain a stable weight, and have a positive outlook and realistic expectations. In addition, the procedure is usually reserved for non-smoking patients who have no serious medical conditions.
An Initial Consultation at Premier Image
At Premier Image, we realize that it can be hard for patients to talk about an area of their body they are not happy with, so we take any and all measures to make sure patients are completely comfortable and at ease during their initial consultation. During the consultation, the following occurs:
- A detailed medical history is taken
- A physical examination is performed
- Pictures are taken for review and comparison purposes
Because liposuction is a highly individualized procedure, the surgeon will have a lengthy discussion regarding the patient’s desires, goals, and expectations. She patiently listens to patients and works with them to create a treatment solution that will provide them with the results they want. Following the consultation, the surgeon invites patients to ask questions and bring up concerns so they can properly answer/address them.
I had some stubborn back fat that would not go away with diet and exercise. I decided to get Liposuction with Dr. Boehm and am very pleased with my results. I felt that she was able to understand exactly what I was concerned with and gave me very realistic expectations. She has great bedside manner and is very knowledgeable and skilled. I will plan on using her for any of my future needs.

Advancements in surgical techniques have allowed liposuction to be performed with little to no bruising occurring after surgery.

Swelling is to be expected after liposuction. It will gladly decrease over the course of several weeks and should not affect your exercise routine provided you are not exercising too much.
Do I need to lose weight prior to my procedure?
Because it is not realistic to think that all patients will be at their ideal body weight prior to surgery, most patients will not be asked to lose weight. However, patients who are significantly overweight will be encouraged to reach a realistic and obtainable weight goal to improve the outcome and increase the safety of their procedure.

In most cases, exercise may be resumed ten to fourteen days after surgery. It may take a few weeks for patients to be able to perform the same exercise routine as they did prior to surgery.
When will I have my stitches taken out?
The surgeon closes all incisions with small absorbable sutures that do not need to be removed.
Will I have a noticeable scar?
All surgical incisions leave scars; however, there will be strategically placed incisions in areas near natural skin folds so scars will not be noticeable.

Patients who exercise regularly and eat a healthy, well-balanced diet can expect permanent results from their liposuction procedure.
Do I have to stop smoking to have surgery?
Because smoking interferes with the body’s healing processes and is bad for one’s overall health, patients are asked to stop smoking before and after surgery.
