The thickness and shape of the eyebrows are something that has changed through the decades. While thin eyebrows were in fashion for a while, more women are sporting thicker brows now than ever before. Some women may have thinned their eyebrows excessively, leading to permanent thinning of the eyebrows. Other women may not be happy with the shape of their eyebrows. At Premier Image Cosmetic & Laser Surgery in Sandy Springs of the greater Atlanta area, Dr. Louis DeJoseph and his team of experienced staff can help you restore eyebrow fullness and shape through hair restoration techniques such as an eyebrow transplant.
What is Eyebrow Transplant Surgery?
Eyebrow transplant surgery is a procedure to transfer hair grafts to the brow area. The hair follicles are taken from donor sites on the bach of the scalp and positioned in a way that provides natural thickness.
Since the donor hair comes from head hair it is unlikely to stop growing, this provides a permanent solution.
Who Benefits from Eyebrow Restoration?
There are many reasons to consider thickening your eyebrows. Candidates for such a procedure range from those looking to enhance their appearance to those looking for convenience:
Thin Eyebrows
Those who either have genetically thin brows or have damaged their follicles with excessive tweezing will benefit from the added thickness a transplant provides.
Low Confidence
Self-confidence is an important aspect of your personality. If something in your appearance brings you down, improving it can be life-changing. By thickening your brows or changing the shape, you’ll no longer have to feel as if people are focusing above your eyes.
Need to Boost Expressiveness
The intensity of your facial expressions adds an intangible quality to your interpersonal relations. Having expressive eyebrows can boost the effectiveness of your interactions with others. Thicker and well shaped eyebrows accentuate your smile and make your raised brows a piercing statement.
Save Time and Money
Women with thin eyebrows that want to thicken them up before a social event often spend a considerable amount of time doing so. Drawing in perfect brows for your evening can be a hassle. It can also add to your monthly beauty expenditures. Since an eyebrow transplant is a permanent solution, the time you save is a convenience you’ll enjoy for years to come.
Preferring a Natural, Long-lasting Result
Even if you enjoy drawing in eyebrows, the products that you use cannot provide a completely natural result. With a transplant, the implanted hair is indistinguishable from the strands that are already there. Women that strive for a natural look but have thin eyebrows will benefit greatly from the procedure.
Looking to Hide a Scar
The brow area is a common spot for scars or burns. Whether from falling off your bicycle at a young age or from a nasty spill during an outdoor workout session, cuts and scars are not all that rare. A properly performed eyebrow transplant can cover up an old blemish or stitch marks.
Eyebrow Transplant Consultation
An eyebrow transplant consultation at our Premier Image Cosmetic & Laser Surgery clinic with Dr. DeJoseph will put you at ease with regards to the procedure. You can ask any questions you may have on your mind at that time.
Additionally, we will discuss your medical and hair history in detail. We will review your anatomy, paying close attention to your brows. We will discuss what looks natural for your face. For some people, computer imaging can be used to demonstrate the result.
The Eyebrow Transplant Procedure
An eyebrow transplant is very similar to hair transplants for the scalp. Dr. DeJoseph first numbs all areas with an anesthetic to avoid pain. Dr. DeJoseph will take grafts from the back of the head or above the ears. These grafts include the follicle that makes the hair and the hair shaft itself. There will be one small incision on the back of the scalp that will be hidden in the hair.
In order to place the grafts in the eyebrows, small incisions are made in the desired shape, location, and trajectory. The grafts are then placed into these small micro-incisions. The procedure takes approximately two to three hours.

Eyebrow Transplant Recovery
Recovering from eyebrow transplant surgery is a quick process. There will be some scabbing in the area for the first few days and you mustn’t pick or scratch them.
You should also refrain from intense exercise for as long as two weeks post-surgery. This may vary depending on your progress and your surgeon will advise you accordingly. In the case that you notice swelling, bleeding, or pus in the area of the transplant, contact the surgeon.
In the final stages of your recovery, you will notice that the transplanted hairs may fall out. This is not a cause for alarm. It is a sign that the follicles have been accepted at the donor site and that they should grow back in over the next few months.
Eyebrow Transplant Aftercare
Your surgeon will advise you not to touch or wash your eyebrows for anywhere from a week to 10 days. You can wash and care for your face after the transplant but you must allow your brows to heal.
After that, you can gradually get back into your daily routine. You will be able to shower and even do some mild exercise.
After you begin to wash the area again, tiny scab-like crusts will appear. If enough time has passed as per your surgeon, you can gently remove them with a rubbing motion.
In the case of any bleeding or discomfort, stop and try again after two days. If the area takes on a pink appearance after these crusts are removed, don’t be alarmed as it is natural.
Eyebrow Transplant FAQS
Eyebrow transplants fall out after the procedure as a normal consequence of how transplanted hair works. The hairs subsequently grow back in over the weeks and months to come and are permanent.
Depending on how many grafts you need and the thickness you are trying to achieve, the cost of eyebrow transplants varies. Eyebrow transplants are considered nonmedical procedures and therefore do not receive insurance coverage.
Having said that, if you need an eyebrow transplant due to an accident or underlying medical condition, you may be able to have it covered. In any case, an eyebrow transplant tends to cost in the low to mid four digits.
It should be noted that the quality and safety of an eyebrow transplant depends on trusting a competent and experienced surgeon. You should be wary of institutes that offer cheap eyebrow transplants through flashy marketing and limited-time deals.
Alternatives to eyebrow transplants include micropigmentation and non-surgical methods like makeup.
Micropigmentation is a special tattoo that aims to give your eyebrows a fuller look.
Microblading is a type of micropigmentation for eyebrows. It is performed with a small tool that has several needles. These needles add semi-permanent pigment to the brow in small strokes that resemble hairs.
Choosing between the two methods comes from weighing your goals.
If you want a permanent solution for your thin eyebrows, only a transplant will achieve this. Microblading is a temporary solution that also offers you the ability to vary the way your eyebrows look if you choose to do so. However, it’s important to keep in mind that the pigment used in microblading tends to fade with time. You’ll need to have the procedure done every one to three years to maintain the result.
