Dermabrasion “refinishes” the skin’s top layers through a method of controlled surgical scraping. The treatments soften and smooth surface irregularities. Dermabrasion can be performed on small areas of skin or on the entire face using surgical instruments to remove the affected skin layers.
Dermabrasion is often used to improve the look of facial skin scarred by acne, accidents or previous surgery, or to smooth out deep facial lines and wrinkles. It’s also used to remove moles and pre-cancerous lesions.
If you’re considering surgery to refinish the skin, this information will give you a basic understanding of the procedure-when it can help, how it’s performed, and what results you can expect. It can’t answer all of your questions since a lot depends on your individual circumstances. Consultation with one of Premier Image’s Facial Plastic & Reconstructive Surgeons will answer all your questions and help you achieve your goals.
Because these treatments have sometimes been offered by inadequately trained practitioners, it’s especially important that you find a facial plastic & reconstructive surgeon who is trained and experienced in the procedure. After all, dermabrasion usually involves the most visible part of your body-your face.
During your initial consultation, don’t hesitate to ask any questions or express any concerns you may have. Your facial plastic surgeon will be equally open with you, explaining the factors that could influence the procedure and the results-such as your age, skin condition, and previous plastic surgeries.
Should surgery be scheduled, you will meet back with your surgeon for a pre-operative appointment to discuss will discuss your medical history, conduct a routine history & physical examination, and once again review your goals and expectations, as well as the procedure in detail, along with its risks and benefits, the recovery period, and pre & post procedure instructions.
Pre & Post-operative skin care instructions are paramount for any skin resurfacing procedure. Your surgeon will give you specific instructions on how to prepare for surgery, including guidelines on eating and drinking, and on avoiding aspirin and other medications that affect blood clotting. You will also be given special instructions regarding the care and treatment of your skin prior to surgery. If you smoke, you’ll probably be asked to stop for at least two weeks before and after surgery, since smoking decreases blood circulation in the skin and impedes healing.
AFTER YOUR SURGERY
Right after the procedure, your skin will be quite red and swollen. The swelling will subside in a few days. It’s very important that you follow your doctor’s instructions exactly, to ensure the best possible healing.
Your new skin may be a bit swollen, sensitive, and bright pink for a couple of weeks. Typically, makeup can be applied to conceal this temporary redness. During this time, you can begin gradually resuming your normal activities. Avoid strenuous activities for at least two weeks, especially active sports like basketball, soccer, etc… Avoid sun and wind and chlorinated water for at least four weeks. A physical sun-block should be worn until normal pigment has returned to your skin.
