Facial Plastic Surgery in Atlanta
Procedures / Chin & Cheek Enhancement

Chin Augmentation Atlanta, GA

People don’t always realize how much the chin affects the overall look of the face—but once you see the difference, it’s hard to unsee. A chin that’s too small or doesn’t stick out enough can make the jawline feel soft or throw off your profile. That’s where chin augmentation comes in. In Atlanta, GA, Dr. Dejoseph helps people bring better balance to their features with customized chin implants. By adding just the right amount of structure, he creates a more defined, confident look, without making you look like someone else.

Chin and Cheek Implants – Dr. Louis DeJoseph, Atlanta Georgia

Often times we use cheek implants or chin/jaw implants, which are implantation to the skeletal frame of the face (cheek and chin bone), to add volume. This adds to the second dimension of the face, meaning the rounding of the cheeks, or the rounding of the face, and adding structure to the lower area of the face.

The Chin Augmentation Procedure Explained

How do we get to these areas? How do you put cheek implants in without seeing them? We place them with tiny, small incisions underneath the upper lip. That gives access to the cheekbone area. With chin augmentation, we make small incisions underneath the chin, placing the implant afterward, giving beautiful facial contours to this area. The Chin augmentation + rhinoplasty combo is popular because the chin and the nose are like first cousins, one affects the other. The nose can have many sizes and shapes but if someone has a large nose, we have to make sure the chin is in the right proportion so that it looks correct from the profile view ensuring a good facial structure.

The surgeon may insert the implants in conjunction with other cosmetic procedures, such as a facelift , or as a separate procedure. Some bruising and swelling may occur after chin implant surgery and cheek enhancement, and patients may experience some difficulty with facial movements like talking and smiling. You may need to follow some restrictions on your diet. Discomfort can occur during the first few days, but we will prescribe you the medication that can help to control this. Most patients find that they are well enough to return to work about one week after their chin and/or cheek enhancement procedure.

Benefits of a Cheek Enhancement

What are the benefits of Chin Augmentation?

Chin augmentation (also known as genioplasty or chin implants) offers several cosmetic and structural benefits:

  1. Improved Facial Harmony and Balance: Enhances the proportion between the chin, nose, and forehead, often improving side-profile aesthetics.
  2. More Defined Jawline: A stronger chin creates a more structured jawline, contributing to a youthful and attractive appearance.
  3. Neck Contour Enhancement: A more prominent chin can reduce the appearance of a double chin or sagging neck by improving angles and definition.
  4. Increased Confidence: Patients often feel more confident and satisfied with their appearance following chin augmentation.
  5. Correction of Receding or Weak Chin: Enhances facial projection and corrects congenital or age-related chin recession.
  6. Customizable Results: Chin augmentation procedures (implants or sliding genioplasty) can be tailored to the patient’s facial anatomy and aesthetic goals.
Dr. Louis DeJoseph

The Chin Augmentation Procedure: What to Expect

During the chin augmentation procedure, Dr. DeJoseph will make a small incision either inside the mouth (along the lower gum line) or just beneath the chin. These discreet incision options help minimize visible scarring.

Next, a small pocket is carefully created in front of the chin bone to accommodate the implant. Dr. DeJoseph will then place a biocompatible implant that enhances the size, shape, or projection of the chin. Once the implant is securely positioned, the incision is closed with sutures, and a small dressing may be applied to support the area as it heals.

Chin augmentation is typically performed as an outpatient procedure under local anesthesia with oral or IV sedation. The surgery usually takes between 30 minutes to 1 hour, and most patients can return home the same day.

The Ideal Candidates for Chin Augmentation

Chin augmentation is a great option for individuals who wish to improve the shape, size, or projection of a recessed or underdeveloped chin. Ideal candidates are those who:

  • Are in good overall health and free from serious medical conditions
  • Are non-smokers or willing to quit before and after surgery to support healing
  • Have a weak or receding chin that affects facial balance or jawline definition
  • Have realistic expectations and a positive outlook about their appearance
  • Are looking to achieve greater facial harmony without altering their natural identity

Chin augmentation can benefit both men and women who want a stronger, more balanced profile and improved facial symmetry.

Chin Augmentation Initial Consultation

Patients who are interested in chin augmentation should schedule a consultation with Dr. DeJoseph. During this appointment, Dr. DeJoseph will carefully evaluate your facial structure and chin profile to determine the best approach to help you achieve your aesthetic goals.

He may:

  • Discuss your desired outcome and expectations
  • Perform a facial analysis to assess balance and proportions
  • Show you sample chin implants or 3D imaging to visualize potential results
  • Recommend whether you may benefit from complementary procedures such as rhinoplasty or jawline contouring
  • Review your medical history, current medications, and lifestyle factors (e.g., smoking)

This is also your opportunity to ask questions, understand the risks and benefits, and make sure you feel confident moving forward. Maintaining realistic expectations is key to satisfaction with your results.

Preparing for a Chin Augmentation

Before undergoing chin augmentation, patients will need to follow specific pre-operative instructions to ensure a safe and smooth procedure. Dr. DeJoseph may ask you to:

  • Avoid certain medications such as aspirin, anti-inflammatory drugs, and herbal supplements, as they can increase the risk of bleeding.
  • Adjust or pause current medications if necessary, under guidance from your physician.
  • Stop smoking well in advance of surgery, as smoking can interfere with healing and increase the risk of complications.
  • Arrange for transportation and post-operative care, as you won’t be able to drive yourself home after the procedure.
  • Follow fasting instructions if sedation or general anesthesia will be used.

Dr. DeJoseph will provide a personalized preparation plan based on your medical history and surgical goals.

Chin Augmentation Recovery

Following chin augmentation, it’s common to experience swelling, bruising, and mild soreness around the chin and lower face. This discomfort is usually manageable with prescription or over-the-counter pain medication as recommended by Dr. DeJoseph.

Patients are typically able to return to work and normal daily activities within 5 to 10 days, depending on their individual healing progress. If an external incision was made, it will be closed with sutures that may be removed during a follow-up visit. Internal incisions typically dissolve on their own.

To aid healing:

  • Keep your head elevated while sleeping.
  • Avoid vigorous activity or heavy lifting for at least 2 weeks.
  • Stick to soft foods for a few days if advised.
  • Makeup can be used to cover bruising once the skin has healed sufficiently.

Final results become more noticeable as swelling subsides, typically within a few weeks to a few months.

Facial Implants Patient Reviews

Dr. Louis DeJoseph performed my chin implant and neck liposuction on November 25, 2019. I’ve wanted this necklift for a while and had a recommendation for Dr. DeJoseph through another doctor. After consulting with Dr. DeJoseph and finding him easy to talk to, caring, as well as knowledgeable and accredited, I decided to have him do this procedure. I am very happy with the results! Everything was smooth sailing after, especially the follow-up appointments, and with his general warm demeanor and extensive knowledge I definitely recommend Dr. DeJoseph to anyone.

Frequently Asked Questions About Chin Augmentation

What are some of the most common reasons patients are interested in chin augmentation?

At Premier Image Cosmetic and Laser Surgery, patients choose chin augmentation to:
– Enhance Facial Harmony: A weak or recessed chin can make other features like the nose appear more prominent. A chin implant can bring balance to the overall facial profile.
– Strengthen the Jawline: Chin augmentation creates a more defined and sculpted jawline, especially when viewed in profile.
– Improve Self-Confidence: A well-defined chin can significantly boost a patient’s self-esteem by creating a more assertive, proportionate appearance.

Is chin augmentation safe?

Yes. When performed by a board-certified facial plastic surgeon, chin augmentation is a very safe procedure. Complication rates are low, and implants are made of biocompatible materials designed for long-term use.

Do I have to stay overnight after undergoing chin augmentation?

No. Chin augmentation is an outpatient procedure. After your initial recovery in our surgical facility, a family member or friend can take you home the same day.

When can I get back to everyday life after chin augmentation?

Most patients return to work and normal activities within 5 to 10 days. However, strenuous activities and heavy lifting should be avoided for a few weeks during the healing process.

When can I return to exercise after chin augmentation?

Light activity such as walking can resume a few days after surgery. More intense exercise should wait for 3 to 4 weeks, or as directed by Dr. DeJoseph.

How long will it take for the results of chin augmentation to show?

Improvements are visible right after surgery but become more defined as swelling fades — usually within several weeks to a few months.

What are chin implants made of?

Dr. DeJoseph uses chin implants made of silicone or other medical-grade, biocompatible materials designed to feel natural and integrate safely with the body’s structure.

Do chin implants affect diet?

Immediately after surgery, you may need to stick to soft foods to avoid straining the chin area. Sharp or crunchy foods should be avoided for at least one week.

Are there any risks of chin augmentation procedures?

All surgical procedures carry risks. With chin augmentation, potential risks include bleeding, infection, implant shifting, changes in sensation, and dissatisfaction with cosmetic results. These are rare when performed by an experienced surgeon.

Is there visible scarring after chin augmentation?

Scars are usually minimal or completely hidden, as incisions are typically placed either inside the lower lip or discreetly under the chin.

Why are chin implants recommended over injectable fillers?

While fillers can temporarily enhance chin projection, implants offer a permanent solution with more structural definition and no need for repeated maintenance.

How long do chin implants last?

Chin implants are designed to last a lifetime, though they can be removed or replaced if necessary.

Is there a way to ensure chin implants look natural?

Yes. Choosing a board-certified facial plastic surgeon like Dr. DeJoseph is key. He carefully customizes implant shape and size to match each patient’s facial anatomy and aesthetic goals.

Will aging cause chin implants to look unnatural?

No. Because the implant is placed beneath the soft tissues and muscle, it ages naturally with the rest of the face and maintains a realistic appearance over time.

Will smoking affect chin augmentation recovery?

Yes. Smoking slows healing, increases the risk of infection, and may interfere with overall results. Patients must stop smoking before and after surgery for optimal recovery.

Can chin augmentation be combined with another procedure?

Absolutely. Chin augmentation is often combined with rhinoplasty, neck liposuction, facelift, or cheek enhancement for more comprehensive facial balancing.
